Anti-bullying: Good Deeds Campaign
The effectiveness of this project
For service learning, I initiated an anti-bullying project which I called the “Good deeds campaign”. The reason for implementing such a project is because I have learned that bullying is a current issue within the school which I completed my teaching experience, as well as many other schools world-wide. The purpose of the project is to take a stand against bullying and promote positive behaviour; good deeds.
I worked with the grade 7 learners to take a stand against bullying. The learners presented speeches, poems, a play, and posters to educate learners and the community about bullying. The speeches, poems and play were presented in an assembly, and the posters were presented outside the school gates. The grade 7 learners also held a talk for the intermediate phase learners about the consequences of bullying and what they should do if they experience or know someone who is experiencing bullying.
This was effective in raising awareness about the issue of bullying, helping learners, teachers, and parents recognize the signs and consequences of bullying. When people are educated about the problem, they are better equipped to prevent and address it. Additionally, the project promoted strategies and interventions to modify learners’ behaviours, teaching empathy, conflict resolution, and communication skills, which can lead to a reduction in bullying incidents. This is effective is encouraging bystanders to act against bullying. Additionally, the project encourages inclusivity and creates a safe environment helping learners engage more effectively in their learning and develop positive social relationships.
This project can have a lasting impact on the school and local community. By instilling values of respect and empathy in students, they are better prepared to combat bullying not only in school but also in their future lives, which can have a positive societal impact.
How has service-learning changed me personally?
Organising and leading this anti-bullying campaign helped me gain a deep understanding about the different types of bullying, its impact on individuals, and the broader social implications. This increased my awareness of the issue and made me more empathetic and sensitive to the struggles of those who experienced/experience bullying. Being part of a meaningful cause, such as taking a stand against bullying has given me a sense of purpose and motivated me to continue making a positive change in my community. Advocating the project required me to speak in public which helped me develop confidence and stronger communication skills.
How has service-learning developed me professionally?
Leading this project required strong leadership skills. I learned how to plan, organise, and motivate learners to work towards a common goal. Learning about the issue of bullying and strategies to address it helped me develop conflict resolution skills which is imperative in the education sector, working with learners who are exposed to bullying incidents.
The benefit of this initiative to the school
Bullying is a current issue experienced in the school. Initiating the anti-bullying campaign at the school fosters a safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive learning environment. By raising awareness about the detrimental effects of bullying, teaching empathy, and empowering learners to become active bystanders, such a campaign not only reduce bullying incidents but also promote positive social interactions and mental well-being. As learners feel more secure and confident in their school community, they can focus on their academic growth, develop essential life skills, and carry forward the values of respect and empathy into their future lives. The impact of this anti-bullying campaign can extend far beyond the school years, contributing to the creation of a more compassionate and inclusive society.
